Adult Volunteering

Volunteer with us and make a difference to a young person’s life.

As an adult volunteer, you can help support young people to thrive and learn. You don’t need any prior knowledge, just a can-do attitude, an interest in heritage and a passion for helping young people thrive!

Why do we need you?

The World Heritage Youth Ambassadors (YAMS) aims to empower young people age 11-25 to have a powerful voice in their own lives, their community and the World Heritage Sector. Using World Heritage as a tool, we work with young people age 11-25, many of whom are vulnerable, to gain skills, confidence, increase self-esteem and of course have fun!

Where are the opportunities based?

Each site has different volunteer opportunities and ways to apply. Please contact the site, which you wish to volunteer with for further details.

How much time will it take?

How much you volunteer is totally up to you. Most people will volunteer between 4-10 hours a month, usually through attending the YAMS clubs and activities.

What activities might I do?

Adult volunteers attend and help supervise the various clubs and activities provided by YAMS.

Adult volunteers can support young people by providing a listening ear, getting involved in teaching life skills like cooking, or even training in heritage!

Will I be trained?

Yes, there are numerous training opportunities available to adult volunteers.

As a minimum, all adult volunteers will be expected to undertake safeguarding training.

An on-site induction will be offered when you start.

What will I gain?

Are there volunteer expenses?

Yes, out of pocket expenses can be re-imbursed.

What are we looking for?

  • Empathic nature and understanding of youth work.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Good conversational skills.
  • Friendly.
  • Responsible and mature.
  • Ability to engage with young people in a positive manner.
  • An interest in heritage.
  • A willingness to undertake and participate a variety of different types of activities.

As this program works with young people under 18, many of whom are vulnerable, a fully enhance DBS is required, along with a character reference. While a criminal record does not automatically bar you from volunteering with us, positive disclosures with require a detailed conversation with the program director and on-site staff. Please contact us to discuss any concerns you may have.
