Through their dynamic relationship the canal became a testing ground for new ideas that were carried forward into subsequent engineering practice internationally.<\/p>\n
It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2009 and\u00a0 to be included on the World Heritage List, sites must be of outstanding universal value and meet at least one out of ten selection criteria.\u00a0 Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and canal meet the following three criteria:<\/p>\n
[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”2_5″ module_class=”ds-vertical-align” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image src=”http:\/\/www.whyam.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/world-heritage-youth-ambassadors-pontcysyllte-2.jpg” alt=”World Heritage Youth Ambassadors Pontcysyllte” title_text=”World Heritage Youth Ambassadors Pontcysyllte” align=”center” _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default” transform_rotate=”0deg|0deg|4deg” width=”80%” custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”40px||||false|false” custom_margin_phone=”” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|tablet” box_shadow_style=”preset2″ box_shadow_color=”rgba(0,0,0,0.56)”][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”]Pontcysyllte Aqueduct crosses the Dee Valley on nineteen cast iron spans at a height of 126 feet\/38.4 meters: a structure recognised internationally as a masterpiece of waterways engineering and a pioneering example of iron construction.\u00a0 The canal exemplifies the new approaches to engineering\u00a0developed by Britain during the Industrial Revolution and taken up in subsequent waterway, railway and road construction throughout the world.\u00a0 The engineers intervened in the landscape with a new scale and intensity, challenged by the need to cut the waterways across the grain of the Welsh upland topography.\u00a0At the time of its completion this length of canal was described as \u2018composed of works of more difficult of execution than can perhaps be found anywhere within an equal distance of canal navigation\u2019.\u00a0 It combined vigour of engineering with a particular sensitivity to its impact on a valued landscape.\u00a0All of the features were to become characteristic of highly engineered transport routes can be seen in the site, including tunnels, cuttings, aqueducts and embankments, many of them technically innovative or of a monumental scale, together with bridges, culverts, weirs and associated features.\u00a0 The whole site has remained in continuous use for two hundred years \u2013 for some one hundred and thirty years by traffic in coal, iron, slate, limestone and general goods, and in more recent times to carry pleasure boats and convey drinking water.\u00a0 It is widely valued for its historical importance, beautiful environment and breathtaking structures and attracting hundreds of thousand visitors a year.<\/p>\n

Blaenavon Industrial Landscape was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. The Giants Causeway and Coastline is a spectacular area of global geological importance on the sea coast at the edge of the Antrim plateau in Northern Ireland.
